A Burial for Kulu Yandaki marks the feature directorial debut of Theo-ziny Joel, a film that unfolds like a novel written in images. Crafted as an odyssey steeped in satire and dark comedy, the project treats every frame as a sentence, each one deliberate, layered, and expressive.

The story centers on a broke, drunken father and his estranged son, a petty thief. Bound by resentment and years of emotional distance, the pair are forced to confront their fractured relationship when the father’s late wife refuses to rest in peace. Her corpse becomes “restless,” demanding that they carry her coffin on foot across unpredictable terrain to honor her final wish. Their chaotic journey becomes both a physical trek and a metaphorical excavation of grief, identity, and buried truths.

Through its unconventional premise, the film delves into themes of family, self-identity, politics, and the absurdity of human belief.

Currently in post-production, A Burial for Kulu Yandaki is gearing up for its international film festival premiere. The film is produced by Zinifrica Moving Image in collaboration with Abazee Productions, with proud support from Sony MEA.
